Emergent Old Fashioned Liberalism
By Bob Dewaay
A just published book entitled An Emergent Manifesto of Hope edited by Doug Pagitt and Tony Jones contains 25 essays written by various leaders in the Emergent “conversation.” Pagitt and Jones provide introductions to the various sections of the book. As difficult as it has been to pin down this movement theologically, this book erases any doubts about the key unifying theological perspective of the movement—theological liberalism. It also makes clear thow they see largely as the enemy—evangelicals who consider the Bible ineerrant and who preach from it authoritatively. ”
…One of the most egregious examples of theological liberalism found in the book (An Emergent Manifesto of Hope) is in an essay entitled “The Sweet Problem of Inclusiveness – Finding our God in the Other” by Samir Selmanovic. His inclusive view was made famous by Roman Catholic theologian Karl Rahner. * It is called “anonymous Christianity” and is footnoted by Selmanovic. To illustrate his belief, Selmanovic tells of a tribal chief, Chomina, who refused to convert to Christianity as he was dying because he thought doing so would separate him from his people. Here is how this decision was interpreted by Selmanovic. “Moved by the Holy Spirit, people like Chomina reject the idea of allegiance to the name of Christ and, instead, want to be like him and thus accept him at a deeper level. He claims, “But Christianity’s idea that other religions cannot be God’s carrier of grace and truth casts a large shadow over our Christian experience.” The Holy Spirit, according to the Bible, testifies of Christ (John 16:26). The Spirit doesn’t lead people to reject the person and work of Christ as defined in the Bible so that people can somehow ontologically meet “Christ” through other religions, as the inclusivists like Rahner and Selmanovic claim. States Selmanovic, “The godliness of non-Christians is not an anomaly in our theology.” Our response to this is simple: The Bible warns about those having a form of godliness but denying its power (2 Timothy 3:5)

New Age Sympathizer Leonard Sweet to Speak at Seventh Day Adventist Conference Source: Editors at Lighthouse Trails The 4th Annual National Conference on Innovation, sponsored by the Ohio Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, will take place in October in Columbus, Ohio and will feature New Age sympathizer/emerging futurist Leonard Sweet. On the conference website, it states: Partners in Innovation is a convergence of people and organizations committed to providing the environment, encouragement, resources and support for the emergence of the Adventist Church of the future in North America.... We ask you to consider becoming a partner in developing this far-reaching initiative to energize a new future for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. Leonard Sweet, who promotes mysticism, christ-consciousness, and the "New Lights" movement that touts people like Matthew Fox, Ken Wilber, and other mystic proponents, recently spoke at Rick Warren's Small Groups Conference. Sweet states in his book Quantum Spirituality that the "power of small groups is in their ability to develop the discipline to get people 'in-phase' with the Christ consciousness (meaning the divinity of man) and connected with one another (meaning interspirituality)(p. 147). http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/index.php?p=1203&more=1&c=1 |

Emerging Theologian or Politician? It’s not only Al Franken who is making news in Minnesota State Politic. Doug Pagitt, presenter at the Ohio Conference's Innovation Conference (2007), now aspires to join the field of politics. If successful, Truth-Watch wonders if this might result in another invitation to the Buckeye state in the future? "I Hope I Can Count On Your Vote" "Congratulations to President-Elect Barack Obama. I have many thoughts about this important election and all that has gone with it. At this exciting time I have my own announcement to make. After two years of thinking, planning and dreaming I have made a decision to add a new component to my work and service life: I am going to join the political field and run for public office. So, today I announce that I am running for the Minnesota State Legislature in 2010..." What Insights Do Our Baptist Friends Enjoy…That We Don’t |

This year, Doug Pagitt was a featured speaker at the 2007 National Innovation Conference, (held in Columbus Ohio Sept 30-Oct 2). Shortly after those presentations, a scheduled appearance at the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (October 16, 2007) was cancelled over his theological views on Christ, human sexuality, and the role of Scripture. To Read More on this story … http://www.christianresearchservice.com/SBCandDougPagitt.htm Attendees at the inaugural National Innovation Conference in 2005 were admonished that “If it isn’t illegal, immoral or anti-Christian go do it.” Truth-Watch wonders: Did Pagitt’s theological view actually degenerate that dramatically in a period of two weeks…or do our Baptist friends have insights that we do not have? One wonders what would qualify as “Anti Christian” under the Adventist church’s current working definition? Does the Ohio Conference of SDA understand/acknowledge (as the Southern Baptist Convention appears to believe) that leadership bears some accountability for the theological beliefs of those they invite as public speakers? |
